Awesome work! I really appreciate the effort and am looking forward to the videos with captions. I used the pads as live-subtitles and despite the delay, they helped me a lot.
Things to improve: dependency on wlan (cable-lan for subbers?)
Unfortunately the failing wifi also made impossible for me to read the subtitles in some talks, but I guess that is out of your power :/h
i just found out that text marked up with '*' automatically triggers italic formatting in Amara as well as '_' results in underlining. i found a solution here: http://support.amara.org/support/discussions/topics/9779.:
both symbols have to be escaped
html escape code
for '*' is: *
for '_' is: _
and it works fine with this :)
I checked that with the textfile you get afterwards, in both cases you don't have a " * " in the text file, in the case with the * it stays like that, or if you just stay with the " * " it becomes a <i> and </i>. So we will have to replace this via script in both cases : (
I checked it with vlc, the "*" Version works, I'll add that in the wiki - thanks.
You can find the solution in the wiki, in short words: just still use the * we will fix it with a script since they do apprea in the text file, just not the way we want them to.
We have to clarify, wether this also affects players like VLC, mplayer, XBMC, and so on and their windows and mac counterparts (long, long time ago i knew them by name) and also hardware playback devices like WD-book and so on...

Ich sammle eben mal alle Ideen nach der ersten Erfahrung mit „Überwachen & Sprache“
- Wir sollten die FAQ, bzw. die Prozessbeschreibung danach sortieren, in welcher Prozessphase wir sind, bzw. potentielle Mit-Untertitler*innen, also aufteilen nach „Mitschreiben während des Talks vor Ort“, „Mitschreiben am Stream“, „Subtitles in amara bearbeiten, nach Verfügbarkeit der Aufzeichnung“
- Wir brauchen besseres Feedback für Interessierte, wie denn der Status des Prozess ist. Wenn das beim nächsten Mal mit http://subtitles.media.ccc.de/ früher und mehr Automatisierung dabei sind, wäre da schon das meiste gewonnen. Man bräuchte da also solche Status wie: „transcription in etherpad started“, „transcription in etherpad completed“, „transcription in amara started“, „transcription in amara completed“, „transcription in amara reviewed“, „translation in amara started“, „translation in amara completed“, „translation in amara reviewed“, bzw. ne entsprechende Matrix-ähnliche Anzeige
- wir brauchen irgendwie mehr Aufmerksamkeit dafür, dass die subtitles im wesentlichen erst *nach* der ganzen Veranstaltung erstellt werden können und einen Mechanismus, der hier die entsprechende Motivation für einsammelt
- Blogeintrag auf events.ccc.de? Mail auf CCC Mailverteiler analog zu letztem Jarh?
- – entsprechend ist alles großartig, was dafür sorgt, dass wir schneller die entsprechenden Recordings haben :)
- – schlechte Mitschriften in Etherpads machen die Arbeit auf amara nicht so viel einfacher. Wir müssen aufpassen, dass wir da nicht unnötig Ressourcen rausschmeißen. Vollständige Transkripte können möglw. als Untertitel übernommen werden (mit der Import-Funktion), müssten aber vorher in entsprechend kurze Schnipsel aufgeteilt werden. (Nahezu) Fließtext, wie er derzeit bei der Keynote vorhanden ist, in amara aufzuspalten, ist ein frickeliges Unterfangen.
- – eine Indikation, welche Sprecher*innen gerade am reden sind, braucht es im Normalfall nicht, bei den Q&A-Session dürfte das dann aber eine Notwendigkeit werden. Hier müssen wir vielleicht nochmal drauf achten, dass das überall mit eingebaut wird (genauso wie die *laughing*, *applauding*-tags, usw.)
- – wir müssen noch das Problem lösen, wie wir mit Talks umgehen, die zu großen Teilen gemischt-gesprochen sind: Beispiel Talk zur Seidenstraße. Denn hier müssten wir eine Untertitelspur anlegen, die beide Originalsprachen enthält und von dieser aus dann erst die Übersetzung in vollständiges Englisch oder vollständiges Deutsch reproduzieren – oder habe ich da übersehen, wie man mehr als eine Sprache einer Untertitel-Spur zuweisen kann?
- – können wir die Beschreibungen, die man aufgefordert wird in Schritt 3 auf Amara zu machen, vielleicht vorab irgendwie automatisch generieren?
- – falls das recording-team irgendwelche statusinformationsseiten plant, wollen wir da auch mit drauf …
Zu den Talks mit total gemischter Sprache: ich habe bei Amara angefragt ob sie nicht einen Typ "mixed" oder "no specific language" oder "original" anlegen können, das wäre in dem Fall eigentlich ideal, schätze ich bekomme irgendwann morgen Abend eine Antwort - hoffe ich jedenfalls. Davon könnte man dann ein nur deutsch und nur englisches File bauen.
- Ich habe eine Antwort bekommen: wir sollen "Klingon" nehmen :D
Hmmm. Das lässt natürlich die entscheidende Frage offen: was machen wir mit Talks, die auch eine volle klingonische Übersetzung bekommen sollen? #aworkaroundisnotabugfix
Ich finde, eine Sprache „nativ“ sollte schon irgendwie existieren … und dann ggf. der Default sein, der dann auch auf eine reale Sprache verweisen könnte, wenn der Talk vollständig in einer Sprache gehalten ist. #just0,02$thatareopinionbutnothelpfull
